The SWAG CUP is a ceremonial match (hitherto football) played at the end of the season between two exciting clubs in the League. SWAG CUP is played to honour ex-GFA and Hearts of Oak Director, Henry Plange Nyemitei, popularly known as H.P. Nyemitei (who also worked at SIC Insurance Company; a regular sponsor of the match).
SWAG Cup was birthed to generate revenue for SWAG activities, especially the organization of the SWAG Awards. It is a platform that showcases players; often displaying unknown players who later become stars and in some cases superstars. The clubs create the kind of surprises with the SWAG CUP that the fans love.
However, due to huge financial demands from the popular clubs, the match was not played in some years. Some of the exciting clubs featured are Ebusua Dwarfs, Dumas Boys, Tano Bofoakwa, Eleven Wise, Hasaacas, Okwawu United, All Blacks, AshantiGold, Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Heart of Lions and Liberty Professionals. Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs were the first winners in 1972. Overall, Asante Kotoko have won 14 times, followed by Hearts of Oak’s five times and AshantiGold’s four times.
