45th MTN SWAG Awards – Mr. Richard Akpokavie receives SWAG meritorious award after his 1981 Hockey stick

The Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee Mr. Richard Akpokavie has receive a meritorious award from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), for his immense and aptly skilled leadership in sports management and administration in Ghana.

In a citation presented by the President of SWAG Kwabena Yeboah reads, “Your contribution to Ghana’s sports development cannot be written off. Your leadership style and counselling to sportsmen and women has given Ghana many deserving athletes especially in Football and Hockey. SWAG is pleased to award you this meritorious award for your dedication to development and management of Ghana sports”.

Mr. Akpokavie rose through the ranks from an athlete to become one of the top sports administrators in the country serving the Ghana Football Association as the Disciplinary Committee Chairman for many years and the Chairman for Ghana Hockey Association for four years after he had served as vice for same years.

As the Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Akpokavie is the only Ghanaian serving on the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and doubles up as the Chairman of Africa Hockey Officials and a member of the World Hockey Officials.

The legal brain who’s a former athlete himself, won the SWAG Hockey Player of the Year Award in 1981 where he was presented with a hockey stick which he has on his shelve till date.

The 45th SWAG MTN Awards will be held at the Splash Alisa Hotel on Saturday October 10, with the Chief Justice gracing the event.

SWAG Awards, the longest running award scheme in Ghana rewards top performing Sports men and Women over the year, and recognises the efforts of persons involved in Sports development.
